400 block of Spruce Street

Car 507 of the Scranton Transit Co.’s Dunmore Suburban line rolls west through the 400 block of Spruce Street on October 7, 1950 — the last day electric streetcars ran in a city the streetcars themselves had helped earn the nickname “the Electric City” by the early 1890s. The lines were phased out through the 1950s and replaced by buses, taking the overhead wire and the rail in the street with them.

On the fit	Frames arrived pre-matched, so this is a straight crop with no scaling, and it keeps the source photograph’s own frame rather than the series’ usual wide crop. The ornate brick building on the right, down toward the corner, still stands and anchors the two shots; every storefront on the near side of the street has since been rebuilt.
